Come to a guided tour of the 12 Art in Storefronts projects on 24th Street before sitting down to an evening of food and films about 24th Street by Martha Rosler, Veronica Majano and Kari Orvik, curated by Clare Haggarty (we were all in a band together once - no, not really...)

Martha Rosler, Secrets from the Street: No Disclosure, 1980
In the 80's, Rosler had a studio near 24th Street in the Mission where she filmed the street in super 8 out of a car window. The footage is collaged with her voiceover making observations about the neighborhood.

Veronica Majano, Two Four, 2002
"Two Four" as in 24th Street in San Francisco’s Mission District, explores the fragile decay of memory in this short hand-processed black and white super 8 film.

Kari Orvik, Mission Portrait Studio, 24th and Mission, 2008
This video documents a day of free public portraits through audio interviews, super 8 film and video footage of participants' reactions to their images, neighborhood and one another.

"Home is something I carry with me" screening

Vero Majano and I compiled some audio interviews, images and super 8 footage from her internship program at the Mission Neighborhood Resource Center for this exhibition, curated by Adrienne Skye Roberts, called "Home is something I carry with me". When Adrienne told me she was putting together the exhibition, I thought that it was important to include in the show (especially one with that title) the voices of people who are homeless in the Mission. The piece is a definite work in progress, but we think it can be a sketch of a larger piece to come.

Home is something I carry with me is an alternative art exhibition and film screening featuring over 40 Bay Area artists whose work interrogates the concept of home. For one weekend, two homes in San Francisco’s Mission District will transform into exhibition spaces and the backyard of a third home will be used for an outdoor film screening.

Unfortunately, 3352 24th Street and 951 Shotwell Street have large staircases and therefore are not wheelchair accessible. There is a hallway leading to the backyard of 348 Shotwell where the film screening will be held is that can accomodate 29" inches across. No stairs, but a few steps down from the hallway

To avoid overcrowded the houses on Friday, come on by early--we open at 4PM. Or wait until Saturday the 5th, both houses are open from 12-5PM.

New Mission Portrait Studio Screening

I’m finally pulling it together here after these last couple of days of election haze to post an event on Sunday where I’ll be screening my new short film/video of the portrait studio we set up at 24th and Mission last month.

It’s the 12th anniversary of K’vetsh open mic on Sunday November 9th. There’s a great line-up of artists - hosted by Tara Jepsen and Kirk Read!

The short video I made documenting my Mission Portrait Studio project will be included in"The Show Starts on the Sidewalk," a screening series about public intervention. The screenings, curated by Bill Basquin and Nomi Talisman, are part of the UC Santa Cruz conference "Intervene! Interrupt!: Rethinking Art as Social Practice"
