Combat Paper

About a year ago I saw a video about Combat Paper and thought it was an amazing project, so I was excited this fall when they came to Berkeley.

-Combat Paper conducts papermaking workshops where veterans can use their uniforms worn in combat to create cathartic works of art. The uniforms are cut up, beaten into a pulp and formed into sheets of paper. Veterans use the transformative process of papermaking to reclaim their uniform as art and begin to embrace their experiences in the military.-

At Berkeley they opened up their workshop to anyone who wanted to participate - the vibe was meditative, communal and damn if paper-making isn't a lovely organic process compared to the chemicals used to make tintypes....Here are a few from my photo shoot with Drew.

Last Friday I did a special portrait session for the graduates at MNRC, then we all headed out to breakfast. The plates were for them to keep - only one wanted to keep their photo, the others gave their tintype to someone important to them. A lovely morning....

I believe I peed on her floor around that time, (actually I know I did...it was an accident already, and a long time ago, and we were having fun, and the bathroom was so far away!) and somehow after numerous moves to faraway places we have still kept in touch and got to be together this past weekend in San Francisco.....

I took photos at the opening reception for the show 'Two Four Mission Home Girls, Circa 1980' put together by Clare Haggarty, Vero Majano and Sandy Cuadra at the Mission Cultural Center - it's up through March 27th....If you are on facebook you can view the photos here.

The show features a great collection of photos by Sandy of her homegirls the Tiny Locas, in the Mission in the late 70's/early 80's, as well as 16mm film and other memorabilia. Definitely worth stopping through if you're in the neighborhood!

In the 80's, Rosler had a studio near 24th Street in the Mission where she filmed the street in super 8 out of a car window. The footage is collaged with her voiceover making observations about the neighborhood.

"Two Four" as in 24th Street in San Francisco’s Mission District, explores the fragile decay of memory in this short hand-processed black and white super 8 film.

Insights Art Exhibition in the New York Times!

The Insights Art Exhibition I've been coordinating for the last 7 years through the LightHouse for the Blind got a full-page write up in the New York Times this past Sunday. Great exposure for the show and the artists. This year's the 20th year the LightHouse has produced the show, and it's been extended through January 15th at the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery.

"Home is something I carry with me" screening

Vero Majano and I compiled some audio interviews, images and super 8 footage from her internship program at the Mission Neighborhood Resource Center for this exhibition, curated by Adrienne Skye Roberts, called "Home is something I carry with me". When Adrienne told me she was putting together the exhibition, I thought that it was important to include in the show (especially one with that title) the voices of people who are homeless in the Mission. The piece is a definite work in progress, but we think it can be a sketch of a larger piece to come.

Unfortunately, 3352 24th Street and 951 Shotwell Street have large staircases and therefore are not wheelchair accessible. There is a hallway leading to the backyard of 348 Shotwell where the film screening will be held is that can accomodate 29" inches across. No stairs, but a few steps down from the hallway

To avoid overcrowded the houses on Friday, come on by early--we open at 4PM. Or wait until Saturday the 5th, both houses are open from 12-5PM.

Larger than life in the window at Jeremy's

If you happen to find yourself on 2nd Street in San Francisco on the corner of South Park near Bryant St., you'll notice some large murals in the window of Jeremy's clothing store. One of those 8 foot panels of different artists features a photo of me sitting on my dining room table with one of my portraits next to me and some text about my work....It is ridiculously large. But anyway, thank you to Cynthia at Jeremy's for making it happen.....

The second part of my Mission Portrait Studio project took place at the 24th and Mission St. BART plaza on Saturday, September 13th. Over 40 people walking through the plaza got a formal portrait of themselves. Thanks to everyone who helped out to make it such a fun morning!

I'll be taking photos up on the roof on Saturday, December 1st from 12-4pm, as part of Southern Exposure and Intersection's Grounded juried show of public interventions. The project invites visitors to be photographed against the view from the roof of 716 Valencia St. @ 18th St., a view which will soon be changed over the next year as construction begins next door for one of 6 new luxury condominium developments on Valencia St. Maps of the proposed sites will be handed out, as well as information on ways for the public to get involved in their community planning process. Mission Portrait Studio

The first day of the Mission Portrait Studio happened on August 25, 2007 at 16th and Mission. Over 40 people had their portrait taken and received 2-3 postcard-sized photos on the spot for their own use. The final project will appear as a video - more details TBA. Thanks to everyone who helped out - two months after the fact!

Beholder-Art Show at Tinlark Gallery

I'll have 6 photos in the Beholder gallery's photography show, along with some great photographers, at the Tinlark Gallery in L.A. on Saturday, May 19th. It's a one-night only show, and I'm still trying to work on getting a car to be there on that night.

The opening for these photos is scheduled for Thursday, February 8, from 3 to 5 PM. If it rains, it will be re-scheduled to Monday, February 12th, from 3 to 5 PM. The event will take place at Plaza 16, the 16th Street BART Station’s southwest plaza, in the Mission District of San Francisco, CA.

Event includes: the opening of “Ladies' Night,” a series of individual portraits of Mission Women by Kari Orvik. The photographs were taken at the Mission Neighborhood Resource Center with participants from Ladies' Night.

Happy New Year everyone. This is my little homage to Fairbanks, Alaska, and to 2006. I'll also take this opportunity to say happy birthday to my dad - today would have been his 89th birthday.

Check back for updates - I'm excited about many things coming up this year, but for now, I'm just chilling, like this river.

1999: Year of the Nun

The show "1999: Year of the Nun" is now up at Jumpin Java cafe: 139 Noe St. @ 14th, through the month of November. The cafe is open everyday until 7:30 - till 8pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Terror? show at Intersection for the Arts is up until November 11th, which includes a combined self portrait and a photo of my father marching through Trondheim, Norway at the end of World War II.

Also, the Ladies Night portraits finally came down from Muddy Waters, and will be up at Balazo 18 Gallery this weekend for the National Harm Reduction Coalition conference fundraiser.

And finally, contrary to earlier predictions, my photo did not actually appear in the November issue of California Home and Design magazine.

Welcome to my blog, where you can find out about something that happened last week or last month....today! So far, it hasn't come naturally for me to to update regularly. But here I am, telling you about a show that opened on September 11th, in which myself and a couple hundred others contributed 8.5 x 11" works to "Terror?" at Intersection for the Arts.

Let's see... in other news from the past, the Insights 2006 exhibition of blind and visually impaired artists opened last Tuesday at SF City Hall. As the fifth show I've been involved with, I'll go ahead and say this one's the best so far. The show includes 100 pieces by 35 artists, including two wonderful photographers who passed away this summer, Jack Gelman and Michael Richard. They will be missed, and we're lucky to celebrate their lives through their work.

That's all for now - it looks like the Ladies' Night portraits will stay up yet another month at Muddy Waters due to serendipitous circumstances, and after that they'll be up at the Harm Reduction Coalition's fundraiser at Balazo in November. Also in November I'll have a solo show at Jumpin Java near the Castro, and one of my photos will appear in California Home and Design magazine, representing the online gallery - the Beholder.

Ladies' Night Benefit raised a G

We raised over a G ($1000....) at the Ladies' Night Benefit on August 25th - thanks to the work of ladies like Michelle and Amanda here, who helped sell raffle tickets and t-shirts to around 100 people who came through to support. Not to mention Lauren and Emalie and everyone else helping out at the table....

We had great dj's and were lucky enough to hear Dorothy's poem about Ladies Night and Dorothy (Campbell) singing Midnight Train to Georgia (with make-up artist Jade in the background). The other make-up artist Treina and her girl were there, and more ladies whose portraits were up came through later on.

It was a special evening, all the more so considering the project was two years in the making, and it was cool to see everybody's crew come through to support a great program!

Website in Progress - Show at Muddy's

As you can see this website is still in progress. (Bear with me!)
Right now I have 15 portraits up from Ladies' Night at the Muddy Waters Cafe at 521 Valencia and 16th St. throughout the month of August 2006. Ladies' Night is a weekly drop-in program for homeless women in the Mission where I set up a portrait studio with a make-up artist and ladies could get formal portraits of themselves. The photos were for their own use and prints of them are up at the cafe to share with the neighborhood. I love Muddy Waters as a space because everybody goes in there and it's open all the time.
We're going to have a Ladies' Night Benefit on Friday, August 25th from 6-10pm at Muddy Waters. The event will probably be more of an open house and art opening (as we can't serve libations), but with dj's and great raffle prizes and all the great people who want to come out and support Ladies' Night. And you can always step out next door to grab a drink at the Casanova.
